Sister System is a bold, brave, and solution-focused community built for girls and young women affected by the care system. With BFN’s funding, they’ve expanded their reach, providing mentorship, respite, and essential resources to some of the UK’s most vulnerable young women. Their work is a powerful example of how targeted grants can break cycles of disadvantage and build resilience.
The Challenge
Girls in the care system face disproportionate risks of poor mental health, educational disruption, and exploitation. Many have never left their local area or accessed opportunities to build confidence and aspiration. Sister System steps in to fill this gap, offering a holistic support network that addresses both immediate needs and long-term empowerment.
BFN’s Impact
- Summer Respite Trip to Cornwall (2021): BFN’s grant enabled 12 young women to experience their first trip outside London, including surfing, beach trips, and campfires. For many, it was their first time seeing the sea—a transformative experience that boosted mental wellbeing and peer relationships.
- Basic Necessities: Funds provided food, hygiene products, and school supplies, removing barriers to education and stability.
- Long-Term Outcomes:
- 75% of participants (18+) forged pathways to further education or employment.
- 80% reported increased understanding of healthy relationships.
- 91% saw improved mental wellbeing.
- Since 2021, Sister System has supported over 400 care-affected girls through educational and mentoring programmes.
Why This Matters
Research from IVAR shows that Black-led micro-organisations like Sister System are uniquely positioned to serve marginalised communities, yet they remain chronically underfunded. BFN’s support helps bridge this gap, ensuring these girls receive culturally competent, trauma-informed care.
