At Black Funding Network, we believe in the power of community-led change. Our grant to ADHD Babes, a vital support network for Black women and non-binary people with ADHD, has helped create safer spaces, reduce stigma, and empower individuals to embrace their neurodiversity. With £6,548.42 raised at our Funder through collective giving, ADHD Babes has expanded its outreach, education, and care initiatives, making a tangible difference in the lives of its members.
Who Are ADHD Babes?
ADHD Babes is a community group for Black women and non-binary people with ADHD, run by and for its members. Their mission is to:
- Build peer support networks and share lived experiences.
- Raise awareness and educate others about ADHD and neurodiversity.
- Bridge gaps between neurodiverse communities and the wider population.
“We aim to inspire and empower people with community, tools, learning, and healing spaces to redefine and understand ADHD.”—ADHD Babes
How BFN’s Funding Made an Impact
1. Support & Care
With BFN’s funding, ADHD Babes provided:
- Fortnightly support groups and bi-monthly peer-led spaces for connection and shared learning.
- Access to therapeutic care, including sessions led by psychological professionals.
- Workshops and resources to improve mental health and wellbeing, such as blogs, ADHD-specific workshops, and video content.
2. Education & Awareness
ADHD Babes used the funds to:
- Host talks and panels to raise awareness about ADHD in Black communities.
- Create thinking spaces and planning groups for inclusive practices.
- Engage in community-based events to challenge stigma and foster inclusion.
3. Outreach & Community Building
The grant supported:
- Partnerships with other neurodiverse organisations to amplify their reach.
- In-person events and workshops to connect members, build skills, and break down barriers.
- Accessibility resources, including fidget toys, bullet journals, sensory tools, and aromatherapy oils for 25+ individuals.
4. Staff & Volunteer Support
To sustain their work, ADHD Babes allocated funds for:
- Volunteer expenses (travel and event costs).
- Monthly facilitators for bespoke sessions on ADHD management techniques.
- Staff supervision and mental health training to prevent burnout and strengthen team resilience.
The Ripple Effect
ADHD Babes’ initiatives have created a future where Black neurodiverse people are empowered, celebrated, and supported. By providing culturally specific resources and safe spaces, they address the unique challenges faced by their community—from diagnosis disparities to mental health struggles.
“We will use the grant to provide staff and volunteer costs, workshop facilitators, accessibility resources, and in-person events. Our goal is to support up to 25 people over six months, ensuring no one feels isolated in their ADHD journey.”—ADHD Babes Team
Why This Matters
Research from organisations like GiveBLACK UK highlights the funding gaps faced by Black-led grassroots organisations, particularly those serving marginalised communities. ADHD Babes is a prime example of how targeted grants can drive systemic change, offering a model for culturally competent, community-led mental health support.
