Collective giving is a revolutionary way to turn small donations into transformative change. At Black Funding Network (BFN), we’ve seen how pooling resources – whether £10 or £10,000 – can fund life-changing projects for Black-led grassroots organisations. Here’s how it works and why it matters.

The Collective Giving Model

  • Democratising Philanthropy: Unlike traditional funding, giving circles like BFN allow anyone to become a philanthropist. No minimum donation is required—just a commitment to collective action.
  • Amplifying Impact: When individuals combine their contributions, even modest amounts can fund entire programmes. For example:
    • £5,000 from 50 members can send 30 girls through Proud To Be Me’s Her Power Her Peace trauma-informed programme.
    • £10,000 can expand Black Men Teach’s mentoring pipeline to 5 more London schools.
  • Transparency and Trust: Members help to select which organisations receive funding, ensuring resources go where they’re needed most.

Why It Works

  • Community-Led Decisions: BFN’s model is rooted in trust and shared values. Our members – drawn from diverse backgrounds – collectively decide which projects to support, fostering a sense of ownership and connection through our select panel process, reviewing the applications, and also nominating organisations to submit their applications.
  • Long-Term Change: Research shows that Black-led micro-organisations are often overlooked by mainstream funders, yet they deliver culturally competent, high-impact solutions (IVAR, 2024). Collective giving fills this gap, providing stable, flexible funding.

Real-World Example

The Funding Network, a BFN partner, has demonstrated how live crowdfunding events can raise thousands in minutes. At BFN, we build on this model by focusing specifically on Black-led organisations, ensuring funds reach communities that need them most.
