A Mission Born from Experience

Ange Evans-Lutterodt has sat with people at their most vulnerable, as a psychiatric nurse, a BABCP-accredited psychotherapist, a clinical supervisor, and now as a doctoral counselling psychologist in training. She built Quiet Time Therapy because she recognised a pattern: those carrying the heaviest burdens were the least likely to receive help. They hold down jobs, show up, and say they’re fine. Services mistake the performance for recovery and discharge them, measuring the mask, not the person beneath it.

In our communities, pain is often private, and asking for help can feel like weakness or shame. So, we keep going, performing “okay” until the performance is all that remains. Quiet Time Therapy exists for the people no one refers, because on paper, they look well. Their work is with what lies beneath.

The Challenge: A System That Overlooks Us

In the UK, the disparities in mental health care are impossible to ignore:
Black individuals are four times more likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act, yet fewer than one in ten access therapy, despite higher rates of need. With only 1% of UK therapists being Black, many face the exhausting task of explaining their entire lives before the real work can even begin. Mainstream services often measure the mask, scores look fine, so they’re discharged as recovered, even while they’re still only surviving.

Their Solution: Therapy Designed for Us

Quiet Time Therapy is a group practice of accredited Black therapists, and their flagship programme, The Quiet Cohort, is an eight-week closed group therapy experience. It integrates seven evidence-based frameworks, with cultural responsiveness built into the clinical model from the start, not adapted from a mainstream one. There is no demand to perform “okay” in the room. Instead, it offers careful screening, validated outcome monitoring (PHQ-9, GAD-7, WSAS), and a space where people can finally exhale.

The Project: Funding the First Cohort

With £6,000, Quiet Time Therapy will deliver the first-ever cohort of The Quiet Cohort. This includes:
Individual screening and assessment for each participant. Eight weekly group sessions with an accredited therapist. Validated outcome monitoring at three key points. Participant materials to support their journey. Clinical supervision and secure infrastructure to ensure ethical, high-quality delivery.

£750 funds one person’s entire journey through the programme.

The Impact: Healing for Those Who Need It Most

This funding will provide 8–10 fully subsidised places for Black and racially marginalised adults who would otherwise be unable to access therapy. The programme is built, screening is live, and partners are ready to refer, your pledge is what starts it.

Why Support Them?

The people who need this most are often the least likely to be referred. They are high-functioning, composed, and quietly exhausted. They don’t present in crisis, until they do.

Mainstream services often miss what lies beneath. Scores may look fine, but survival is not the same as wellness. With only 1% of UK therapists being Black, many spend sessions explaining rather than healing. The gap in care is widening, and the consequences, such as the disproportionate detention rates under the Mental Health Act, are what happens when people are overlooked for years.

The Quiet Cohort was built for this exact need: a closed group, careful screening, and no expectation to perform. It is delivered by accredited Black therapists under clinical supervision, combining cultural responsiveness with clinical rigour.
