In Northumberland Park, the school-to-prison pipeline poses a serious threat to the futures of Black neurodivergent children. Awaken Genius is transforming this reality by addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences and compromised attachment through a holistic, trauma-informed approach that integrates somatic therapy, creative arts, and academic nurture. At our Autumn Funder 2026, Awaken Genius will present their most ambitious project to date: scaling their trauma-informed framework to reach even more children and families. With your support, this vision can become a reality.
Black children and exclusions in school
Black children are three times more likely to be excluded from school than their peers, often due to unaddressed trauma and neurodivergence. Traditional systems frequently overlook the gifts of these children, labelling them as disruptive or at-risk rather than recognising their potential. Awaken Genius is committed to changing this narrative and ensuring every child has the opportunity to thrive.

Wraparound care solution by Awaken Genius
Awaken Genius provides a comprehensive wrap-around ecosystem that supports the whole child. Their Somatic Learning Framework offers body-based regulation modules tailored for neurodivergent children with high Adverse Childhood Experiences scores. Through Creative Arts and Academic Nurture, they deliver holistic support that rebuilds parent-child bonds and fosters neural synchrony. Parent and Child Synchrony initiatives heal attachment wounds and create regulated home environments. Their Community Residency, a three-year Saturday programme at Somerford Grove Adventure Playground and endorsed by Ferry Lane Primary School, provides a safe and nurturing space for growth. For our Autumn Funder 2026, their project focuses on scaling this trauma-informed framework to reach over 500 children and train more specialists in their integrated therapeutic pathway.
The Impact
Since launching, Awaken Genius has achieved remarkable results. Parental stress management has transformed, with 75% of parents now managing stress effectively, up from just 8.3%. Student self-perception has shifted dramatically, as 81.3% of children now identify as a Genius rather than at-risk. Conflict resolution has also improved, with 81.3% of children now choosing to talk through problems instead of reacting with anger. Systemic endorsement has been secured, with Ferry Lane Primary School and local playworkers reporting that Awaken Genius students bring a positive energy that helps them understand overwhelming emotions.
With £6,000 from our Autumn Funder, they could develop new trauma-informed modules, fund specialist therapeutic facilitation for over 100 children and parents, and create and distribute Home-Regulation Kits to bridge the gap between sessions and home.

Why Representation in Education Matters
Representation in education is not just about fairness; it is about justice. Awaken Genius is demonstrating that neurodivergent Black children can thrive when given the right support. Their model does more than teach children to cope; it empowers them to believe in their own potential.
As their team shares, We are not just teaching children; we are healing families and communities. And when they heal, the cycle of exclusion ends.
